Never light your sky lantern indoors, and always check the weather before you light your lantern. If it’s going to be windy or rainy, wait and light it on a different day. Cut out a square piece of paper that’s slightly larger than the open ends. The square piece of paper will be the top of your sky lantern. Make sure the square is big enough to completely cover one of the open ends, and then some. You’ll usually pay between $1 and $2.50 per Chinese sky lantern. Basic white lanterns typically cost about $1 each, but you can pay $2 to $2.50 for biodegradable lanterns or those that are available in a variety of colors and designs. Protect yourself from risk by using sky lanterns responsibly. Always have a fire extinguisher or water on hand in case a fire does break out. Avoid releasing the lanterns in areas with vegetation that can burn easily or locations with obstructions like heavy trees or tall buildings. Limit their use to still, clear nights with no heavy winds, too.
