Then it was time to glue the lantern gores together to form the Thai-lantern’s “bag.” I laid one of the gores, unfolded and open, on the worktable with the inside up. The table had waxed paper on it so that any glue that seeps through wouldn’t stick to it. I had some coarse, recycled kraft paper, and cut it into rectangles to match the original burner's paper layers. Then it was time to glue the lantern gores together to form the Thai-lantern's "bag." I laid one of the gores, unfolded and open, on the worktable with the inside up.
Candle wax will serve as part of the fuel for your sky lantern. Leave the melted candle wax on the lit stove top until you’re ready to use it so it doesn’t harden. Manufacturers often claim that their Chinese sky lanterns can reach incredible heights and remain floating for long periods.
Chinese Lantern: What It Is and How to Make
In Chinese culture, white is related to death or funerals. So, white bamboo lanterns were often used at funerals in China. The most common Chinese lanterns are red, oval/round, and decorated with red or golden tassels. They also come in many different shapes, including cubes, cuboids, and cylinders. In ancient China, Chinese lanterns were used to provide light and as aspects of worship.

This is really easy project and can be made in much less time and much less money. The Lantern Festival is one of the best days to view Chinese lanterns. The custom of viewing lantern displays on the evening of the Lantern Festival has a history of almost 2,000 years, since the Han Dynasty. Here’s a sketch of one of the gores, with a bit added to the edges to allow for gluing.
Catch A Glimpse Of Chinese Lanterns
So, I had Harry send some of the flying lanterns to me. By the time they arrived on my doorstep, I was excited to see them. I opened the package up, looked at the treetops to make sure there wasn’t too much wind blowing, and I hustled my wife and granddaughter outside to fire the first one up. But, then I saw the latest Skylighter ad for them, and I thought, “I wonder how sky lanterns are made.” Ya see, one of the things I enjoy most is learning how something is made.
Popular illustrations on lanterns include landscapes, portraits of great people, dragon and phoenix designs, birds, and fish. At first, paper lanterns were used to worship Buddha in temples. This paper hot-air balloon’s final weight was 3.0 ounces. At about 50-degrees F in my garage, it was able to carry a payload of .55 ounces of the wire pieces before it started to sag toward the ground.

Lanterns made of more durable paper also require more time to break down. Those made with eco-friendly, biodegradable materials break down much more quickly, which is less detrimental to the environment. Those hoping the 17-year cicadas will do battle with the spotted lanternfly and maybe cut into their teeming masses will be disappointed, says Penn State Extension’s Korman.
They sell a quart spray bottle for about $30, including shipping. This would be enough to treat about a dozen paper hot-air balloons. I gotta admit, I've seen sky lanterns around for several years. But, honestly I never gave them much thought, and I wasn't much tempted to buy any. Sky lanterns can be a fire hazard if they’re not lit in a safe place under the right conditions.
Let Your DIY Floating Lanterns Fly!
Wires aren’t biodegradable, though, so Chinese sky lanterns that contain a large amount of wire aren’t eco-friendly. That’s why you may want to opt for lanterns that feature as little wire as possible. Streets, both in big cities and small towns, are decorated with red lanterns during Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, and the Lantern Festival. Home Depot had some 1″ diameter bamboo poles in their lawn and garden department. I took one of the strips and smoothed it with sandpaper and a razor knife until it was about the dimension of the original lantern’s bamboo. I only sanded the “interior” side of the bamboo because I did not want to weaken the smooth, exterior side of it.
Never light your sky lantern indoors, and always check the weather before you light your lantern. If it’s going to be windy or rainy, wait and light it on a different day. Cut out a square piece of paper that’s slightly larger than the open ends. The square piece of paper will be the top of your sky lantern. Make sure the square is big enough to completely cover one of the open ends, and then some. Check your state and local regulations to make sure you fully understand the laws and what you might be responsible for if you release Chinese sky lanterns.
Then, you need to cut the paper into four similar pieces. You can find the following materials at your local arts and crafts store, and some even at home. I went up to my local Hallmark store and bought some nice tissue paper in different colors. Shipping policies vary, but many of our sellers offer free shipping when you purchase from them. Typically, orders of $35 USD or more qualify for free standard shipping from participating Etsy sellers. Etsy is no longer supporting older versions of your web browser in order to ensure that user data remains secure.
Guessing lantern riddles is one of the most interesting activities of the Lantern Festival. People gather under the hanging lanterns to compete to be the one who figures out the most lantern riddle answers. In Chinese culture, the colors of lanterns express different meanings. Riddle lanterns hanging on gates with riddles written on them were used to welcome guests, who liked to guess the answers to the riddles. Dragon-and-phoenix patterns were the main elements on palace lanterns, which represented royal status or upper class society.
I’m continually amazed by the low cost of a device like this, sold by Skylighter, compared with the time and materials I invested in producing a successful one. The “bag” of the balloon is made up of white tissue paper. This paper has been treated with a fire retardant; it does not catch fire when touched by a flame. I enjoyed finding out how to light the paper lantern, and how to let it inflate and launch it. And, the three of us really did have fun watching it lift off, and then gazing at it for minutes until it flew out of sight and we couldn’t see it any more. Then I quickly got another one out and launched it as well.

Even once you tie the wires, be sure to secure them once more with tape, so it’s extra safe. After this, tie the other ends of the copper wires to the support beams of the frame. At this stage, the burner should span the gap in between while sitting just above the base. First, you should cut your thick straws into four pieces, and then your thin straws into four pieces of similar length. After you’re done making the burner, you can move on to the more creative steps. In order to light it, you’ll use acetone, kerosene, cooking oil, or a candle flame.
